Polverigi
All informations about this city
The urban centre of Polverigi lies on the spur of a low hill, which looks out over a small valley that runs between two short river branches. From the viewpoints the panorama takes in the vast blue sea, the impressive Conero promontory, the vast alluvial valley of the river Esino, and the Apennine peaks. The origins of the place name are unknown. It is commonly believed to derive from the Latin word Pulvis, Pulveris, (dust) due to the sandy and dusty terrain. It was sparsely populated, full of scrubland and thick woods, the habitat of choice for hermits. Evidence of its architectural past includes the Church of the Sacrament, a 13th century construction to a Romanesque-Gothic plan that was rebuilt in the Baroque period. Originally the church was one with the municipal park and Villa Nappi, an ancient residence and now the seat of the ‘Inteatro’ initiative; once the Augustinian monks had been chased away during the Napoleonic reign in 1815 everything was purchased by the Counts Nappi and then in 1972 it was sold to the town council. The parish church of Sant'Antonio is the work of Gabuzzi and conserves an important work by Ercole Ramazzani in 1583 (the deposition from the Cross). The historic centre is set out in circular fashion around the walls of the small medieval castle which is accessed through an ancient gate with a rounded arch. The most important events that take place in Polverigi during the year include: the Passion of Christ along the streets of the town (in the week leading up to Easter); the Inteatro Festival, the international festival of contemporary theatre with shows, performances, conferences and seminars on the theme of the theatre (July) and the Night of the Witches, during which the entire historic centre is turned into an enchanted castle, cellars and gardens become magical scary places, sorcerers’ workshops and creepy cemeteries (September).
