Belmonte Piceno is on a ridge which divides the Tenna and Ete Vivo valleys. Most important archaeological discoveries took place in Belmonte Piceno as 300 Picene tombstones dating back to the Iron Age were unearthed here. Due to their extraordinary quality and quantity they’re housed in the archaeological museum of Belmonte Piceno. It’s one of the most significant Picene necropolises in southern Marche.
Also Silvestro Baglioni, an illustrious biologist, physiologist and humanist who was born in Belmonte Piceno in 1876, took part to the excavation works . He gave outstanding contribution to the history of medicine in the first half of the 20th century.
The church Santa Maria in Muris testifies to the history of the little town and the ancient church SS. Salvatore houses many works of art.
In Belmonte Piceno there are some mud craters, one of which is in the area called contrada “Colle Ete”, on the left bank of the Ete Vivo riverbed, and other two in contrada “Colle Tenna”, on the opposite side, although that area is no longer cultivated and there are no traces of them.
3 km far from Belmonte Piceno, along the road leading to Grottazzolina, if you follow a path which crosses wheat fields and which is not always walkable, you can reach large rocks, which are not very visible, surrounded by oaks. Locals call them “Morrecini” and they’re the ruins of a funerary monument built by the Romans probably around the first century a.C. As it’s a massive building and since there are many niches for statues and cinerary urns, it was probably a collective sepulchre.
Torricella is a hill with lush vegetation. Those looking for peace and nature lovers can relax here and also go for nice walks. From here you can have a wonderful view of the landscape as far as the Sibillini mountains.
Theatre performances are held at the Don Bosco Theatre.
One of the most recurring events is the Santa Croce Festival, with food, music and lottery . It occurs on 3rd May and the two previous days. According to tradition, a splinter of Jesus’ Cross is in Belmonte Piceno and it’s worshipped by locals.
