Rosora
All informations about this city

Rosora is a small village situated on a hill between Mergo, Poggio San Marcello, and Castelplanio. The considerable slope of the eastern side (the difference in altitude is about 250 meters) allows for a wide view over the hills towards the Adriatic Sea. The toponym probably derives from Rasorium or Rosorium or Rasa area, indicating a place where something has been shaved off, or it indicates in Latin terms the reddish coloration of the soil or simply the barren and bare nature of the site.

The origins of the settlement date back to the  barbarian invasions (5th-9th centuries), when the inhabitants of the plain sought refuge on the hills to protect themselves, flocks, and herds. After the year 1000, the huts became masonry buildings that gave rise to a real fortified center equipped with walls and defensive structures (castrum).

The historic center retains some features of the defensive walls, a 13th-century tower, and the castle gate. Dating back to the 18th century is the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, in Latin cross, which houses a seventeenth-century wooden crucifix, made by Pier Dominici Neofrischi.

Rosora is located in a wine production area, known for the white wine "Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi". In October, the "Festa della sapa" takes place: sapa is  a product of the region's peasant tradition, obtained by reducing the must into a dense liquid used to season cornmeal polenta or to make cakes.
