Peglio
All informations about this city
Peglio is a small municipality in the upper Metauro valley, north-west of Urbania. It stands on the top of a chalk hill and its houses are built down the hillside. The ancient castle built by the Longobards provides visitors with wonderful views across the valley below. At the very top of the hill stands the 13th century Girone Tower with a large bell bearing two inscriptions with Gothic characters. The parish church of St. Fortunato is one of the oldest churches in the diocese of Urbino: it is built in Baroque style and contains a valuable series of plaques depicting the Stations of the Cross, probably made in the ceramic workshops of nearby Casteldurante. Two crypts dating back to the Longobard period are of particular interest, which were discovered a few decades ago. Peglio is part of the ‘Renewable Energy Communities’ initiative promoted by the Legambiente: it has undertaken projects designed to save energy and for producing energy from renewable sources, for the energy needs of the municipality’s inhabitants. Peglio’s main event is the ‘De Gustibus’ festival: a celebration of music, dance and food held in July.
